Mature fields do not need a fashionable lifting method. They need the right method for each well.
Gas lift can be compelling where crude properties, well depth, pressure behavior, and a reliable gas supply align. In other wells, progressive-cavity pumps, electric submersible pumps, or thermal methods may be more appropriate. The decision cannot be governed by a basin-wide slogan.
The real information problem
A defensible selection joins production history, PVT data, completion and mechanical condition, pressure behavior, intervention history, and the current surface constraints. In most operating environments, those records live in different files and systems. The engineering calculation may be sound while the evidence behind its inputs remains fragmented.
iPDM Pro's role is not to choose the artificial-lift method automatically. It is to federate the records, identify their version and origin, run explicit deterministic checks, and present the engineer with a traceable basis for decision.
What governed selection looks like
- Establish the well and equipment identities.
- Reconcile the latest approved production and mechanical records.
- Apply engineering screening rules whose inputs and limits are visible.
- Record the alternatives, exceptions, and professional approval.
- Preserve the decision package for the next review.
The technique remains an engineering choice. Better information makes that choice auditable.
